Steel Pipe Types We Supply

Steel pipes are bought three ways: by manufacturing route (seamless, welded or ERW), by material grade, and by dimension (nominal size and schedule). Most enquiries specify all three. The sections below follow the same order.

Seamless Pipes

Seamless pipes are produced from a solid billet that is heated and pierced over a mandrel to form a hollow shell, then rolled and sized. With no weld seam, the wall carries uniform properties around the full circumference, which is why seamless is specified wherever pressure ratings, cyclic loading or aggressive media leave no margin for a weld line to fail.

Seamless costs more per metre than welded, and hot-finished seamless cannot hold tolerances as tight as cold-finished products. It is specified anyway for:

  • High-pressure and high-temperature process piping
  • Refinery, petrochemical and fertiliser service
  • Boiler, superheater and reheater circuits
  • Sour service and other corrosion-critical lines

ERW Pipes

ERW (electric resistance welded) pipe is formed by cold-rolling strip to shape and joining the edges with resistance or high-frequency induction welding, with no filler metal added. The external flash is normally trimmed flush, and the weld zone can be seam annealed or the pipe fully normalised so the seam behaves like the parent metal.

ERW is chosen for good reasons, not just price:

  • Tighter dimensional tolerances than hot-finished seamless
  • More economical at volume and in larger diameters
  • Consistent wall thickness, which matters for structural and mechanical work

Above roughly 200 mm, most welded material is ERW or submerged arc welded (LSAW, DSAW or spiral SSAW). Our comparison of ERW, DOM and seamless tube explains where each route makes sense.

Welded Pipes

Welded pipes cover ERW alongside electric fusion welded (EFW) and submerged arc welded products. EFW uses filler metal and is common in larger stainless sizes; SAW variants dominate large-bore transmission piping. Welded pipe suits low and medium pressure lines, water and utility service, structural applications and long-distance conveyance where the economics of seamless do not stack up.

When you enquire, state whether the specification permits welded product. Some project specifications mandate seamless regardless of duty, and confirming this up front avoids a requote.

Pipe Schedule Chart and Pipe Size Chart

Pipe sizing catches buyers out because Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) is a designator, not a measurement. A 2 inch pipe has an actual outside diameter of 60.3 mm. The outside diameter is fixed for a given NPS, and the schedule sets the wall thickness, so a higher schedule means a thicker wall and a smaller bore at the same OD.

NPS is used with inches; DN is the metric equivalent in millimetres; NB (nominal bore) is used interchangeably with NPS. Below NPS 14 none of them equals the true outside diameter. From NPS 14 upward, NPS is the actual OD in inches.

Two points worth noting. Above NPS 8, the stainless "S" schedules (40S and 80S) diverge from the carbon steel schedules of the same number, so confirm which series your drawing calls for. And this chart is a reference for enquiry purposes, not a substitute for the governing standard; always work to a current copy of ASME B36.10M or B36.19M.

Applications of Steel Pipes in Various Industries

Steel pipes are specified across almost every process and construction sector, but the grade that suits one duty is often wrong for another. The applications below indicate which part of our range each industry normally draws on.

  • Oil and gas: API 5L line pipe for transmission of crude, refined product and natural gas, with ASTM A106 Gr B seamless on the high-temperature process side. Sour and offshore service moves to duplex or nickel alloys.
  • Refining and petrochemical: seamless carbon steel for general process lines, chrome-moly alloy grades where creep at temperature governs, and Hastelloy or Inconel in the aggressive corrosion circuits.
  • Power generation: IBR pipes for regulated boiler installations, alongside P11, P22 and P91 for superheater and main steam circuits, and boiler tubes for water wall and economiser sections.
  • Chemical and fertiliser processing: stainless steel pipes in 304L, 316L and 317L, with 904L and SMO 254 where sulphuric or phosphoric acid duty rules out standard austenitics.

  • Pharmaceutical, food and dairy: 316L in the hygienic circuits, where the low carbon content allows welded assemblies without post-weld heat treatment and the surface finish can be controlled to prevent product entrapment.
  • Construction and infrastructure: structural sections, and ASTM A252 Grade 3 pipe pile used as a permanent load-bearing member or as a shell for cast-in-place concrete piles.

  • Shipbuilding and marine: cupro-nickel and duplex for seawater systems, with low temperature carbon steel where the specification calls for impact-tested material.
  • Pulp and paper, sugar and distillery: 304 and 316 stainless across liquor, condensate and evaporator duty, with heat exchanger and condenser tubes on the recovery side.

Frequently Asked Questions - About Steel Pipes 

Seamless pipe is pierced from a solid billet and has no weld seam, so it is preferred for high-pressure, high-temperature and corrosive duty. ERW pipe is formed from strip and welded along a longitudinal seam, and typically holds tighter dimensional tolerances at a lower cost.

The schedule sets the wall thickness for a given nominal pipe size. Because the outside diameter stays constant, a higher schedule means a thicker wall and a smaller bore.

No. NPS is a dimensionless designator. A 2 inch pipe has an actual outside diameter of 2.375 inches, or 60.3 mm. Only from NPS 14 upward does the designator equal the true outside diameter.

It depends on the medium, temperature and pressure. Carbon steel suits general service; chrome-moly alloy grades suit creep at temperature; stainless handles corrosion; nickel alloys handle chlorides and acids. Share the duty conditions and we can help match the grade.
