Understanding ASTM A252 Grades

ASTM A252 is divided into three grades. Each grade has progressively higher yield and tensile strength, making them suitable for different soil conditions and structural load requirements.

Manufacturing Types for ASTM A252 Pipe Pile

ASTM A252 pipe piles are produced in four manufacturing methods. The correct choice depends on pile diameter, project specification, and structural requirements:

  • Seamless (SMLS): Produced without a weld seam from a solid steel billet. Available in diameters up to approximately 24". Provides the most uniform wall thickness and highest resistance to stress concentration. Typically specified when no weld seam is acceptable in the design.
  • ERW (Electric Resistance Welded): Formed by rolling steel strip and welding the seam using electrical resistance. Available in diameters from 4" to 24". Cost-effective for standard-load projects and widely used for building foundations and road bridge piers.
  • LSAW (Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded): Steel plate is pressed into a cylindrical shape and welded with a straight longitudinal seam. Available in diameters from 16" to 48". Anti-Corrosion Coatings for Pipe Pile
