Solitaire Overseas is a premier Hastelloy C22 Pipes Supplier, Manufacturer & Exporter based in Mumbai, India, serving critical industries worldwide for over 25 years. Our Hastelloy C22 Pipes conform to ASTM B622, ASTM B626 and ASME SB622 standards and are manufactured in UNS N06022 / WNR 2.4602 grade. As part of our comprehensive Hastelloy Products portfolio, we supply seamless, welded, ERW and EFW pipes in sizes from 1/8" NB to 16" NB with complete material traceability and EN 10204 Type 3.1/3.2 certification.

What is Hastelloy C22 and Why Choose It?

Hastelloy C22 (UNS N06022) is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten alloy engineered specifically for environments where both oxidizing and reducing corrosive conditions exist simultaneously, a challenge that defeats most conventional alloys. With approximately 56% nickel, 22% chromium, 13% molybdenum, and 3% tungsten, C22 represents a significant metallurgical advancement over its predecessor Hastelloy C276, particularly in chloride-containing oxidizing environments.

The key differentiator lies in the chromium content: C22 contains 20-22.5% chromium compared to C276's ~16%, which translates to a Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) of 65 versus C276's 52. In practical terms, this means C22 pipes can withstand chloride concentrations and temperatures that would cause pitting failure in C276 within months. For chemical processors operating bleach plants, FGD systems, or seawater-cooled heat exchangers, this extended service life often justifies the 15-20% cost premium over C276.

Another critical advantage is C22's resistance to intergranular attack in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) after welding. Unlike many nickel alloys that require post-weld heat treatment to restore corrosion resistance, C22 pipes can be welded and placed into service in the as-welded condition without sensitization concerns. This makes field fabrication and repair economically viable, particularly for large-diameter piping systems where post-weld heat treatment would be prohibitively expensive.

Industries choose Hastelloy C22 Pipes when:

  • Operating temperatures exceed 150°C in chloride-containing solutions where C276 would experience crevice corrosion
  • Oxidizing acids (nitric, sulfuric, chromic) are present alongside reducing species in the same process stream
  • Welded joints require maximum corrosion resistance without post-weld heat treatment
  • Seawater or brine contact occurs at temperatures above 60°C where most austenitic stainless steels fail
  • Sour gas service (H2S) requires NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 compliance with superior pitting resistance

Our complete range includes seamless Hastelloy C22 Pipes for high-pressure applications, welded pipes for large-diameter low-pressure systems, and ERW/EFW pipes for structural and process applications. All Hastelloy pipes are supplied with full material test certificates, PMI testing reports, and third-party inspection documentation.

Temperature Resistance & Operating Range

Hastelloy C22 Pipes maintain excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance across a wide temperature spectrum from cryogenic conditions to 650°C (1200°F). However, optimal performance windows vary depending on the corrosive environment:

  • Oxidizing Acids (HNO3, H2SO4, CrO3): Room temperature to 150°C — superior to C276 and 316L. Above 150°C, consider C-276 or tantalum-lined steel depending on concentration.
  • Reducing Acids (HCl, H3PO4): Ambient to 120°C for concentrations up to 20%. For higher concentrations or temperatures, review isocorrosion diagrams or consult our technical team.
  • Chloride Solutions & Seawater: Up to 120°C with excellent pitting and crevice corrosion resistance. Critical Crevice Corrosion Temperature (CCCT) is 102°C compared to 80°C for C276 and <50°C for 316L.
  • High-Temperature Service (>400°C): Strength retention remains good but consider oxidation resistance and thermal cycling effects. For continuous service above 500°C in oxidizing atmospheres, consult isocorrosion data.
  • Cryogenic Service (<-100°C): Alloy C22 maintains ductility and toughness at cryogenic temperatures without embrittlement, making it suitable for LNG and liquid nitrogen piping systems.

Welding & Fabrication of Hastelloy C22 Pipes

Hastelloy C22 offers excellent weldability and is commonly used as a weld filler material to improve corrosion resistance of weld zones. The alloy's balanced composition minimizes sensitization and intergranular corrosion in heat-affected zones.

Welding Consumable TypeRecommended Grade
Filler Wire622, 686 CPT
Welding Electrodes122, 686 CPT

Surface Preparation: Remove all oil, grease, marking inks, and oxide scale within 25mm of the weld zone using stainless steel wire brushes or solvent cleaning. Unlike carbon steel, nickel alloys do not tolerate contaminants even fingerprints can cause porosity.

Joint Preparation: Use V or U-groove joint geometry with 60-75° included angle. Maintain 1.5-2mm root gap for pipes <3" NB, 2-3mm for larger sizes. Machine or grind joint faces smooth — torch cutting leaves a carbon-rich layer that must be ground off.

Backing Gas: Argon purge at 10-15 SCFH is mandatory for the root pass to prevent oxidation and porosity. Maintain purge until weld cools below 200°C. For orbital welding, purge the entire pipe segment with oxygen levels <50 ppm measured with an oxygen analyzer.

Welding Parameters (GTAW/TIG): 80-120A for 1/8" wall, 140-180A for 1/4" wall. Travel speed 8-12 IPM. Use DCEN (straight polarity). Filler wire AWS A5.14 ERNiCrMo-10 (alloy 22 filler) — do not substitute C276 filler as it reduces weld metal corrosion resistance.

Interpass Temperature: Keep below 150°C (300°F). High interpass temps increase carbide precipitation risk and reduce toughness. Allow cooling between passes on thick-wall pipe.

Post-Weld Treatment: Solution annealing is optional but recommended for maximum corrosion resistance in severe service. Heat to 1120°C (2050°F), hold 2-5 minutes (thin wall) or 10-15 minutes (thick wall), then water quench or rapid air cool. For field-welded piping where PWHT is impractical, the as-welded condition provides acceptable corrosion resistance in most C22 applications.

Frequently Asked Questions — Hastelloy C22 Pipes

Hastelloy C22 Pipe (UNS N06022 / WNR 2.4602) is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy pipe with outstanding resistance to both oxidizing and reducing corrosive media. Its higher chromium content makes it superior to C276 in pitting and crevice corrosion resistance.

C22 contains ~22% Cr vs ~16% in C276, giving it a higher PREN index (65 vs ~52) and better performance in chloride-rich, oxidizing environments. Both alloys perform similarly in reducing environments like formic and oxalic acids.

Alloy C22 Seamless Pipe is manufactured per ASTM B622 / ASME SB622. Welded pipe follows ASTM B626 / ASME SB626. Additional applicable standards include ASTM B619, B775, B751, ISO 6207, and DIN 17751.

We supply Hastelloy C22 Pipes from 1/8" to 16" NPS in seamless, and up to 600mm OD in thick-wall variants. Schedules range from SCH 5 to XXS. Custom sizes are available on request.
