ASTM A335 Grade P91 is a chrome moly alloy renowned for its exceptional strength and temperature resistance. It is classified as a creep-strength-enhanced ferritic (CSEF) steel, specifically designed to withstand prolonged exposure to high temperatures without deforming. The material's durability and superior creep strength are a direct result of its carefully controlled heat treatment process.

The P91 designation signifies a specific composition of approximately 9% Chromium and 1% Molybdenum, along with minor additions of vanadium. Chromium enhances temperature strength and oxidation resistance, while Molybdenum improves elasticity and high-temperature creep strength. To achieve these optimal properties, our ASTM A335 P91 pipes undergo a rigorous heat treatment process, which includes normalization at 1050 °C, air cooling to 200 °C, and tempering at 760 °C.

Applications of Alloy Steel P91 Pipes and Tubes

Alloy Steel P91 pipes are specifically designed for high-temperature and high-pressure applications where strength and resistance to creep and oxidation are critical. Key industries and uses include:

Power Generation: Used in boilers, superheaters, and reheater lines.

Gas Processing Equipment: Ideal for systems handling hot, high-pressure gases.

Oil and Petrochemical Plants: Employed in refinery furnaces, heat exchangers, and process piping.

Heaters and Boilers: Essential components in industrial heating systems.

Frequently Asked Questions About Alloy Steel P91 Pipes and Tubes

Alloy Steel P91 is a high-strength, heat-resistant material commonly used in power generation and petrochemical industries. It is a ferritic alloy made with chromium, molybdenum, and vanadium, which gives it excellent high-temperature strength, corrosion resistance, and good weldability.

Compared to P91 Type 1, P91 Type 2 has more stringent chemical composition requirements. This results in superior corrosion and creep resistance under high temperatures and pressure, making it the preferred choice for more demanding applications.

The thickness of a P91 pipe varies depending on its schedule and outer diameter. Common schedules range from Sch 20 to XXS, with typical wall thicknesses from 2mm to 14mm.

The primary difference lies in their chemical composition. P22 contains 2.5% chromium and 1% molybdenum, whereas P91 contains a much higher percentage of chromium (9%) and 1% molybdenum. The increased chromium and specific heat treatment of P91 enhance its creep strength, making it a "creep-strength-enhanced ferritic" (CSEF) material, ideal for applications requiring superior strength at extreme temperatures.

The standard hardness range for P91 steel is typically between 190 and 250 HB (Brinell Hardness). The ASTM A335/ASME SA-335 standard specifies that the maximum hardness should not exceed 250 HB.
