What is Alloy Steel P91 Pipe?

A335 P91 is a ferritic alloy steel that possesses very high strength properties that fail to deteriorate over time, and is creep resistant. It is also known as 9 Cr 1 Mo steel or chrome moly pipe, which is dependent on its modal composition. Compared to previous A335/SA335 T22 or P22 grades would demonstrate high strength at temperatures up to 600 °C. The the oxidation temperature limits is also much higher leading to elements that could be engineered with less thickness. This results in nearly 10 times higher thermal fatigue life while engineers can increase the operating temperature to a greater temperature which will increase efficiency. P91 generally generates at least a 2-to-1 ratio less wall thickness which creates lighter hanger loads, less welding time, and uses less filler metal. The advantage afforded by this high chrome content in this steel. Grade 91 has 9% chromium and 1% molybdenum compared to the next best P22 with 2.5% chromium.

These pipes and tubes are available in a variety of sizes ranging from small diameters (e.g., 1/8" to 1" for tubes) to large diameter pipes. The sizes can be customized based on client requirements.

The outer diameter and wall thickness of P91 pipes vary, depending on the schedule, which can range from Sch 20 to XXS. The wall thickness of P91 chrome pipes typically ranges from 2mm to 14mm, with lengths reaching up to 16,000mm.

P22 contains 2.5% chromium and 1% molybdenum, while P91 contains 9% chromium and 1% molybdenum. P91 is a chrome-molybdenum alloy known for its exceptional strength and heat resistance. It is a creep-strength-enhanced ferritic (CSEF) material designed to improve creep strength.

Normalizing at 1050 °C, air cooling to 200 °C, and then heating to 760 °C to temper it are the steps used to create this metal.
