What is ASTM A213 Grade T11 Alloy Steel?

ASTM A213 / ASME SA213 is the governing specification for seamless ferritic and austenitic alloy-steel boiler tubes for high-temperature service. Grade T11 classified under UNS K11597 and Werkstoff Nr. 1.7335 belongs to the low-alloy chromium-molybdenum (chrome moly) family. The 1.00–1.50% Cr content provides oxidation resistance and elevated-temperature tensile strength, while the 0.44–0.65% Mo addition improves creep resistance — the material's ability to resist slow plastic deformation under sustained load at high temperatures.

Unlike standard carbon steel boiler tubes, SA213 T11 material retains adequate tensile and yield strength well above 450 °C, making it the industry-standard choice wherever carbon steel has reached its thermal service limits. T11 is specified in ASME Section I power boiler codes, ASME Section VIII pressure vessel codes, and equivalent international standards. It is among the most widely used grades in the broader family of alloy steel tubes due to its combination of cost-effectiveness, weldability, and long-term performance reliability in cyclic thermal environments.

T11 vs P11 — Key Differences Explained

A frequent source of confusion for procurement engineers: T11 (ASTM A213) refers to seamless tubes used as heat transfer surfaces in boilers and heat exchangers. P11 (ASTM A335) refers to seamless pipes used in pressure piping systems. Both share the same 1¼Cr–½Mo chemistry and UNS K11597 designation, but they have different dimensional tolerances, different testing protocols (T11 requires flattening and flaring tests), and are not interchangeable without engineering review. If your application is a superheater tube bundle or HRSG coil, specify T11. If it is a connecting pipe in a high-temperature piping system, specify Alloy Steel P11 Pipe.

ASTM A213 T11 Tube Chemical Composition — SA213 T11 Material Composition

The SA213 T11 material composition is defined in ASTM A213 Table 1 under UNS K11597. The chromium-molybdenum content is the defining characteristic of this T11 material grade, conferring its high-temperature oxidation resistance and creep strength.

Per ASTM A213 Table 1. UNS K11597 / Werkstoff Nr. 1.7335. The Cr+Mo combination gives T11 its designation as a ‘1¼Cr–½Mo’ or ‘chrome moly’ alloy.

Mechanical Properties of ASTM A213 T11 Alloy Steel Seamless Tubes

The following SA213 T11 mechanical properties apply in the heat-treated (annealed or normalized and tempered) condition as required by ASTM A213. The low maximum hardness value reflects the ductile, weldable supply condition.

Mechanical PropertyT11 ValueTest Standard
Tensile Strength415 MPa minimum (60,200 psi min)ASTM A370
Yield Strength (0.2% offset)205 MPa minimum (29,700 psi min)ASTM A370
Elongation in 2" gauge length30% minimumASTM A370
Brinell Hardness (HB max)179 HB maximumASTM E10

The 179 HB maximum hardness confirms supply in the annealed / normalised-and-tempered condition. Higher hardness indicates insufficient heat treatment or incorrect grade.

Heat Treatment Requirements for SA213 T11 Alloy Steel Tubes

ASTM A213 T11 tubes must undergo heat treatment after forming. This is a mandatory specification requirement — not optional. The following methods are permissible under ASTM A213 Table 3:

Heat Treatment MethodProcedureNotes
Full annealingHeat above lower critical temperature (Ac1), hold, furnace coolProduces softest condition; maximises ductility
Isothermal annealingHeat above Ac1, hold, cool to below 675°C, hold, air coolControlled microstructure; used for tight hardness specs
Normalising + temperingNormalise, then temper at minimum 650°CMost common commercial condition; good toughness

Critical point: The minimum tempering temperature for T11 is 650 °C — slightly lower than T9 and T22 tubes (both 675 °C minimum), reflecting T11's lower alloy content. Heat treatment must always be performed separately from and in addition to heating for hot forming. If specific controlled microstructure characteristics are needed for a critical application, state these requirements in the purchase order to guide appropriate heat treatment selection.

Applications of ASTM A213 T11 Alloy Steel Seamless Tubes

The chromium-molybdenum composition and seamless construction of A213 T11 alloy steel seamless tubes make them the preferred choice for critical high-temperature, high-pressure service. The seamless structure eliminates weld seam discontinuities, resulting in a more homogeneous microstructure with superior creep strength, burst resistance, and cyclic thermal fatigue resistance compared to welded alternatives. Below are the primary application industries, with specific use cases.

  • Power generation (thermal and nuclear): T11 is extensively used in superheater coils and reheater tubes in coal-fired and gas-fired power stations, where steam temperatures routinely exceed 500 °C.
  • Oil and gas refineries: Fired heater tubes in crude distillation units, vacuum distillation units, and hydrocracker charge heaters are commonly fabricated from T11 alloy.
  • Petrochemical and chemical processing: Reformer tubes, cracker tube bundles, and process heat exchangers in ethylene and ammonia plants.
  • Fertilizer plants: Synthesis gas coolers and high-pressure steam generators in urea and ammonia production.
  • Heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs): T11 tubes serve as the primary heat transfer surface in combined-cycle power plant HRSGs, including evaporator and superheater sections.
  • Industrial process heating: Indirect-fired process heaters across cement, steel, and glass manufacturing.

Frequently Asked Questions — ASTM A213 / SA213 T11 Alloy Steel Tubes

SA 213 T11 is a seamless ferritic alloy steel tube grade specified under ASME SA213 (the ASME equivalent of ASTM A213). The SA213 T11 material contains 1.00–1.50% chromium and 0.44–0.65% molybdenum (UNS K11597), giving it excellent creep resistance and oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures up to approximately 580°C. It is primarily used as a boiler tube, superheater tube, and heat exchanger tube in power generation and petrochemical plants.

The main international equivalents for ASTM A213 T11 are: EN 10216-2 grade 13CrMo4-5 (Europe), DIN 17175 grade 13CrMo44 (Germany), BS 3059 Part II grade 620 (UK), GOST 15KhM (Russia). The equivalent pipe grade is ASTM A335 P11. The UNS number is K11597 and Werkstoff number is 1.7335. See the full SA213 T11 material equivalent table above.

T11 material grade is the ASTM/ASME designation for a 1¼ chromium, ½ molybdenum (1¼Cr–½Mo) low-alloy ferritic steel used in tube form. The ‘T’ prefix denotes a tube product under ASTM A213, as distinct from ‘P’ for pipes (ASTM A335). It is one of the most widely used chrome moly grades globally for high-temperature pressure service due to its balance of cost, weldability, fabricability, and long-term thermal stability.

T11 boiler tube is a seamless alloy steel tube manufactured to ASTM A213 / ASME SA213 Grade T11, intended for use as a pressure boundary heat-transfer component in steam boilers, superheaters, and reheaters. IBR (Indian Boiler Regulations) certification is available for equipment registered under Indian boiler inspection jurisdiction.

The maximum permitted SA 213 T11 hardness is 179 HB (Brinell Hardness). This maximum value reflects supply in the annealed or normalised-and-tempered condition, which also optimises toughness, ductility, and weldability for boiler fabrication. If tested hardness exceeds 179 HB, the tubes have not been adequately heat treated and should be rejected.

ASTM A213 covers tube sizes from ⅛" internal diameter up to 5" outside diameter in the standard size range, with wall thicknesses from 0.015" (0.4 mm) to 0.500" (12.7 mm). Solitaire Overseas stocks T11 tubes from ½" OD (12.7 mm) through 5" OD in standard and custom wall thicknesses, in single random, double random, and cut lengths.

Both T11 (ASTM A213) and P11 (ASTM A335) share the same 1¼Cr–½Mo chemistry and UNS K11597 designation but are governed by different specifications for different functions. T11 is a heat transfer tube with tight OD/WT tolerances and mandatory flattening and flaring tests. P11 is a pressure piping product with different tolerances and no flattening/flaring requirement. They are not interchangeable without formal engineering review.

SA213 T11 tubes are compatible with fusion welding (GTAW/TIG, SMAW, FCAW, SAW) using matching 1¼Cr–½Mo filler metals per AWS A5.5 (SMAW), A5.23 (SAW), or A5.28 (GMAW/GTAW). Preheat of 150–250°C is typically required for wall thicknesses above 13 mm to prevent hydrogen-induced cracking. Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) at 650–700°C is generally mandatory to restore toughness in the heat-affected zone and to meet ASME/IBR code requirements.

SA213 T11 tube price depends on OD, wall thickness, schedule, length, quantity, mill origin, and testing requirements. Indicative A213 T11 price starts from approximately USD 1,800–2,400/ton for standard Indian-origin seamless tubes in common schedules (SCH 40/80), ex-Mumbai. Prices vary with global ferrochrome, molybdenum, and steel billet market conditions. Contact us for a firm quotation — we respond within 24 hours and maintain stock for immediate dispatch.
