The chromium content (1.00–1.50%) provides excellent oxidation and scaling resistance at temperatures up to 550°C, while the molybdenum (0.44–0.65%) ensures solid-solution strengthening and resistance to softening under sustained thermal loading. Carbon is kept at 0.15% maximum to retain good weldability. To understand how T12 compares within the broader family, see our guide on what is alloy steel and its types.
| Grade | UNS | C (%) | Mn (%) | P (%) | S (%) | Si (%) | Cr (%) | Mo (%) |

These mechanical properties make ASTM A213 T12 tubes suitable for sustained high-pressure, high-temperature service. The minimum elongation of 30% reflects good ductility and formability, critical for bending and fabrication into heat exchanger tube assemblies.

Heat Treatment: SA213 T12 tubes can be heat-treated by full annealing, isothermal annealing, or normalising and tempering. The annealing temperature range is typically 870–900°C followed by controlled cooling.
Welding: Preheating is not required for conventional arc welding processes. However, when oxy-acetylene or submerged arc welding (SAW) is used, the material must be preheated to 150–200°C and post-weld heat treated (PWHT) at 650–720°C to relieve residual stresses and restore toughness.
Operating Temperature: SA213 T12 alloy steel tubes are rated for continuous service up to approximately 550°C (1022°F), making them suitable for high-temperature boiler and pressure vessel applications.

Solitaire Overseas differentiates itself through verifiable quality infrastructure, not just claims:
ASTM A213 T12 (also designated ASME SA213 Gr T12) is a seamless ferritic chromium-molybdenum alloy steel tube produced under ASTM International Standard A213. The grade belongs to the 1Cr-½Mo family (UNS K11562), containing 1.00–1.50% chromium and 0.44–0.65% molybdenum. It is specifically engineered for high-temperature service in boilers, superheaters, and heat exchangers operating up to approximately 550°C.
The SA213 T12 material composition (per ASTM A213) is: Carbon ≤0.15%, Manganese 0.30–0.60%, Phosphorus ≤0.025%, Sulphur ≤0.025%, Silicon 0.50–1.00%, Chromium 1.00–1.50%, Molybdenum 0.44–0.65%. The UNS designation is K11562 and the European equivalent is Werkstoff Nr. 1.7335 (13CrMo4-5).
The SA213 T12 equivalent grade in European standard is 13CrMo4-5 with Werkstoff Nr. 1.7335 per EN 10216-2. In Japanese JIS standard it corresponds to STBA22, and in British Standard it is designated 620-461. These grades are functionally interchangeable under most engineering specifications but minor composition differences should be verified before substitution.
Both T11 and T12 are low-alloy Cr-Mo grades but differ in chromium and silicon content. T11 (1¼Cr-½Mo) contains 1.00–1.50% Cr and 0.44–0.65% Mo with Si ≤0.50%, whereas T12 (1Cr-½Mo) contains the same Cr and Mo ranges but higher Si (0.50–1.00%). T12 offers slightly better oxidation resistance at comparable temperatures. T11 is more commonly specified for lower-temperature superheater zones; T12 for intermediate-temperature zones.
SA213 T12 tubes are typically supplied in the full-annealed or normalised-and-tempered condition. Annealing is performed in the range of 870–900°C followed by controlled furnace or air cooling. No preheating is required for conventional SMAW/GTAW welding, but oxy-acetylene and submerged arc processes require preheating to 150–200°C and post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) at 650–720°C.
Solitaire Overseas stocks ASTM A213 T12 seamless tubes from ½" OD to 5" OD in standard schedules (SCH 20 through XXS). Custom ODs from 6 mm to 2500 mm OD with wall thickness 1–200 mm are available to order. Lengths are available as single random (4–7 m), double random (7–14 m), or cut-to-length as specified.
SA213 T12 Chrome Moly tubes are widely used in: power generation (boiler superheaters, reheaters), oil refinery and petrochemical fired heaters, catalytic reformer furnaces, offshore oil and gas processing, shell-and-tube heat exchangers, nuclear auxiliary systems, pulp and paper recovery boilers, food processing steam systems, and general high-temperature pressure fabrication.
