FAQ For Alloy 20 Tubes
Alloy 20 is a nickel-iron-chromium austenitic alloy developed for superior corrosion resistance in sulfuric acid and other aggressive environments. It is designated as UNS N08020 and often used in chemical, petrochemical, and pharmaceutical industries.
For welding Alloy 20, the most commonly used filler material is ERNiCrMo-3 or Alloy 20Cb-3® wire, which offers excellent corrosion resistance and maintains the alloy’s integrity during fabrication, especially in chloride and acid-rich environments.
Both Alloy 20 and Hastelloy are corrosion-resistant, but Hastelloy (like C276) offers superior resistance to more aggressive chemicals and higher temperatures. However, Alloy 20 is more cost-effective and ideal for sulfuric acid environments, depending on application needs.
The most recognized trade name for Alloy 20 is Carpenter 20® or Alloy 20Cb-3®, originally developed by Carpenter Technology. It is also marketed under Incoloy® Alloy 20 by Special Metals Corporation, widely used in chemical and marine sectors.
Alloy 20 offers significantly better resistance to sulfuric acid and chloride-induced corrosion than 316 stainless steel. While 316 is suitable for general corrosion environments, Alloy 20 is preferred in highly acidic and chemically aggressive conditions.
Strength depends on application, but Inconel® and Titanium alloys are among the strongest due to their high-temperature stability and tensile strength. For corrosion resistance in acids, Hastelloy C276 is stronger than Alloy 20, especially under extreme conditions.
