What Are SA213 T23 / ASTM A213 T23 Alloy Steel Tubes?

ASME SA213 T23 tubes (also specified as ASTM A213 T23) are ferritic alloy steel seamless tubes designed specifically for high-temperature, high-pressure boiler and heat exchanger service. The designation 'T23' refers to a 2¼Cr–1.6W–0.25V alloy steel commonly known as chrome moly (Cr-Mo) tubing that represents a significant advancement over the T22 grade.

The SA213 t23 grade contains carefully controlled additions of Chromium (Cr), Molybdenum (Mo), Tungsten (W), Vanadium (V), Niobium (Nb) and Boron (B), giving it superior creep resistance and long-term strength at elevated temperatures. These tubes are also referred to as:

  • SA 213 T23 Chrome Moly Tubes
  • ASTM A213 T23 Ferritic Alloy Steel Seamless Tubes
  • K41650 Tubes (UNS designation)
  • 2.25Cr-1.6W Alloy Tubes
  • T23 Chrome Moly Heater Tubes / SA213 Chromoly Heater Tubes
  • Tubi ASME SA213 (European/Italian procurement specification)

Key Properties of T23 Chrome Moly Tubing

  • Superior creep strength at operating temperatures up to 625°C (1,157°F) and beyond
  • Good oxidation resistance due to high chromium content (1.9–2.6% Cr)
  • Corrosion resistance to wet oxidizing media: nitric acid, ferric and cupric salts
  • Resistance to wet reducing media (sulphuric and hydrochloric acids) from tungsten/molybdenum
  • Weldable without mandatory PWHT in many applications (key advantage over T22)
  • Resistance to erosion-corrosion — combined chemical degradation and mechanical wear

Element-by-Element Role in T23 Performance

  • Chromium (1.9–2.6%): Provides oxidation resistance and strengthens the ferritic matrix
  • Tungsten (1.45–1.75%): THE defining element distinguishing T23 from T22 — significantly improves high-temperature creep strength
  • Vanadium (0.20–0.30%): Forms fine carbide/nitride precipitates that pin grain boundaries, maintaining strength long-term
  • Niobium (0.02–0.08%): Refines grain size and contributes to precipitation hardening
  • Boron (0.0005–0.006%): Improves hardenability and creep strength by segregating to grain boundaries
  • Molybdenum (0.05–0.30%): Solid-solution strengthening and high-temperature creep resistance

Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) — T23’s Key Advantage

One of the most significant technical advantages of ASME SA213 T23 tubes over T22 is their welding behaviour. T22 requires mandatory PWHT after every weld — adding fabrication time, cost, and complexity, especially during field erection of boilers and HRSGs.

T23 tubes, by contrast, can often be used in the as-welded condition for certain thickness ranges and service conditions — particularly in water wall panel construction. The controlled boron content, combined with the low carbon specification (0.04–0.10% C), results in a weld heat-affected zone that retains adequate toughness without a mandatory post-weld anneal.

Note: Always confirm PWHT requirements against the applicable engineering code (ASME Section I, ASME B31.1, EN 13480, etc.) and welding procedure qualification. Solitaire Overseas can provide full MTRs and material certifications to support your WPS/PQR documentation.

Testing & Quality Inspection

Every batch of SA213 T23 / ASTM A213 T23 seamless tubes is subjected to rigorous quality inspection in compliance with ASTM A213 and ASME SA213 requirements:

  • Chemical Analysis: Optical Emission Spectrometry (OES) — full 13-element verification
  • Mechanical Testing: Tensile, yield, elongation, and hardness per ASTM E8/E18
  • Hydrostatic Test: 100% per ASTM A213 requirements
  • Non-Destructive Testing: Ultrasonic Testing (UT) and/or Eddy Current Testing (ECT) on request
  • Dimensional Inspection: OD, wall thickness, length, straightness per tolerance tables
  • Surface Finish Inspection: Visual + surface defect examination
  • Mill Test Report (MTR): Supplied with every shipment; TPI by BV, SGS, Intertek available

Applications of ASME SA213 T23 Alloy Steel Tubes

SA213 T23 chrome moly heater tubes are engineered for the most demanding thermal and pressure service:

Power Generation — Boiler, Superheater & Reheater Tubes

The primary application of T23 tubing is in advanced supercritical and ultra-supercritical fossil-fuelled power plants where steam temperatures exceed 600°C. Specific uses:

  • Superheater tubes — direct steam temperature service
  • Reheater tubes — intermediate steam reheating circuits
  • Water wall panels — furnace enclosure in complex boiler designs
  • Economiser tubes — feedwater preheating in high-efficiency units

Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG)

Used in combined-cycle power plant HRSGs where high-pressure steam generation at elevated temperatures demands superior creep resistance.

Oil & Gas Refineries

SA213 T23 tubes serve in process heaters, fired heaters, and heat exchangers in refinery service where process stream temperatures exceed T22 capability.

Frequently Asked Questions — SA213 T23 Alloy Steel Tubes

ASTM A213 T23 (UNS K41650) contains: Carbon 0.04–0.10%, Manganese 0.10–0.60%, Phosphorus 0.030% max, Sulfur 0.010% max, Silicon 0.50% max, Chromium 1.90–2.60%, Molybdenum 0.05–0.30%, Vanadium 0.20–0.30%, Niobium 0.02–0.08%, Boron 0.0005–0.006%, Nitrogen 0.030% max, Aluminum 0.030% max, and Tungsten 1.45–1.75%. Tungsten and Vanadium are the key elements distinguishing T23 from T22.

T23 contains Tungsten (1.45–1.75%) and Vanadium (0.20–0.30%) that T22 does not. T23 has significantly higher yield strength (400 MPa vs 205 MPa minimum) and a higher allowable stress at temperatures above 550°C. T23 can often be used without mandatory PWHT while T22 always requires it. T23 is preferred for advanced supercritical power plants.

Yes, in many applications. Controlled boron content and low carbon (0.04–0.10%) allow as-welded use for certain thickness ranges and service conditions, particularly in water wall panel fabrication. Always confirm against your applicable engineering code and WPS/PQR.

SA213 T23 tubes are rated for continuous service up to approximately 625°C (1,157°F). Avoid the range 540°C–820°C (1,000°F–1,600°F) due to ductility loss risk.

UNS designation: K41650. Equivalent pipe grade: ASTM A335 P23 / ASME SA335 P23. European equivalent: EN 10216-2.

Yes. Solitaire Overseas stocks IBR-approved SA213 T23 alloy steel boiler tubes for Indian boiler projects. Specify IBR approval at the time of enquiry.
