What is ASTM A213 T22 / SA213 T22 Tube?

ASTM A213 T22 is the ASTM International specification for seamless ferritic alloy-steel tubes designed for boiler, superheater and heat exchanger service. The ASME equivalent is SA213 T22. The grade designation "T22" identifies a specific ferritic chrome moly steel containing approximately 2.25% chromium and 1% molybdenum which is why it is also called 2.25Cr-1Mo steel.

The chromium content provides oxidation resistance and creep strength at elevated temperatures. The molybdenum content raises elastic limit, high-temperature tensile strength, and hardness while improving resistance to hydrogen attack, a critical requirement in refinery and petrochemical environments. Together these alloying elements make T22 one of the most widely specified materials for supercritical boiler tubes, superheater coils, and heat exchanger bundles worldwide.

Historically, SA 199 T22 and SA 200 T22 were separate specifications for these compositions. Both were withdrawn and consolidated into the current SA 213 / ASTM A213 standard.

SA213 T22 Chemical Composition (2.25Cr-1Mo)

The SA213 T22 material composition is defined by the ASTM A213 / ASME SA213 specification. The precise balance of chromium and molybdenum is what gives T22 steel its high-temperature performance.

T22 Chemical Composition Note
T22 is a 2.25Cr-1Mo steel (approx. 2.25% Cr, 1% Mo). Do not confuse with T9 (1Cr-0.94Mo) or T91 (9Cr-1Mo-V). The UNS designation is K21590; the European steel number is 1.7380; equivalent trade name is 2¼Cr-1Mo.

T22 vs T11 vs T91 vs P22 — Grade Comparison

Engineers frequently compare T22 with adjacent grades when specifying tubes for high-temperature service. The table below summarises key differences:

GradeSpecCr%Mo%Tensile (min MPa)Max Temp (°C)Key Application
T11ASTM A2131.00–1.500.44–0.65415540Lower temp boiler tubes
T22 (this grade)ASTM A2131.90–2.600.87–1.13415590Superheaters, refinery furnace tubes
T91ASTM A2138.0–9.50.85–1.05585650+High-pressure supercritical boilers
P22ASTM A3351.90–2.600.87–1.13415590Same alloy — pipe form (P22)

T22 (tube) and P22 (pipe) share identical chemical compositions but follow different ASTM specifications. T22 is covered under ASTM A213 (tubes); P22 is covered under ASTM A335 (pipes).

Heat Treatment & Weldability of SA213 T22 Tubes

T22 tubes are supplied in the full annealed or normalised-and-tempered condition as per ASTM A213 requirements. This heat treatment refines the ferritic microstructure and achieves the specified mechanical properties.

Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT): T22 steel requires PWHT after welding to relieve residual stresses and prevent hydrogen-induced cracking. Typical PWHT temperature range is 690–760°C (1275–1400°F). PWHT is mandatory per most applicable codes (ASME, EN 13480) when used in pressure service.

Weldability: T22 has moderate weldability. Preheat of 150–200°C is recommended for wall thicknesses above 12 mm. Matching filler metal (E90S-B3 / ER90S-B3) should be used to maintain the 2.25Cr-1Mo alloy composition in the weld zone.

FAQs About ASTM A213 T22 / SA213 T22 Tubes

SA213 T22 has a chemical composition of: Carbon 0.05–0.15%, Manganese 0.30–0.60%, Phosphorus 0.025% max, Sulphur 0.025% max, Silicon 0.50% max, Chromium 1.90–2.60%, and Molybdenum 0.87–1.13%. It is known as a 2.25Cr-1Mo steel with UNS number K21590.

There is no technical difference — they describe the same material. ASTM A213 is the specification published by ASTM International; SA213 is the identical specification adopted by ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) into its Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. Manufacturers supply tubes to either designation; both are accepted interchangeably in most projects.

ASTM A213 T22 tubes are rated for continuous service up to approximately 590°C (1094°F). Above this temperature, the lower-alloy T22 loses sufficient creep strength and grades such as T91 (9Cr-1Mo-V) are specified instead.

T22 and P22 share identical chemical compositions (2.25Cr-1Mo, UNS K21590). The difference is purely dimensional and form-based: T22 is covered under ASTM A213 (seamless tubes for boilers and heat exchangers), while P22 is covered under ASTM A335 (seamless pipes for high-temperature service). Tube dimensions are generally smaller in OD and held to tighter tolerances than pipes.

Yes. Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) is mandatory for T22 in most pressure-service codes. The standard PWHT temperature range is 690–760°C (1275–1400°F). Pre-heat of 150–200°C prior to welding is also required for wall thicknesses above approximately 12 mm.

Yes, SA213 T22 tubes can be supplied with IBR (India Boiler Regulation) certification. Solitaire Overseas supplies IBR Form III-A certified T22 tubes for use in Indian power plants and industrial boiler applications covered by the Indian Boilers Act.

The maximum permissible hardness for ASTM A213 T22 tubes per specification is 163 HB (Brinell). In practice, supplied material typically measures between 120–155 HB depending on the specific heat treatment applied.

T22 is a lower-alloy chrome moly steel (2.25Cr-1Mo) with a tensile strength of 415 MPa minimum and a service limit around 590°C. T91 is a more highly alloyed grade (9Cr-1Mo-V) with a tensile strength of 585 MPa minimum, capable of service above 650°C in supercritical and ultra-supercritical boiler applications. T91 costs significantly more than T22; T22 remains the most economical choice for the 540–590°C operating range.

UNS K21590 is the Unified Numbering System designation for the 2.25Cr-1Mo alloy steel composition used in ASTM A213 T22 (tubes) and ASTM A335 P22 (pipes). The equivalent European steel number is 1.7380.

Prices depend on OD, wall thickness, quantity, and current market rates for chrome moly alloy steel. As a general indication, T22 seamless tubes range from approximately USD 1,800–3,500 per metric tonne (INR 150,000–290,000 per MT) for standard sizes.
