Inconel 600 Round Bar — ASTM B166 / ASME SB166, UNS N06600

Inconel 600 Round Bar Manufacturer, Supplier & Exporter

Solitaire Overseas manufactures and exports Inconel 600 Round Bar (UNS N06600, Werkstoff Nr. 2.4816) in compliance with ASTM B166 and ASME SB166 standards, with full EN 10204 3.1 MTCs and optional third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TÜV). UNS N06600 / WNR 2.4816 is a solid-solution-strengthened nickel-chromium-iron alloy (min. 72 % Ni) that provides excellent oxidation, chloride-ion stress corrosion cracking, and carburisation resistance at temperatures up to 2000 °F (1093 °C). Its high nickel and chromium content gives it great resistance to both oxidising and reducing atmospheres, while its iron content provides stability during cyclic temperature exposures.

We supply Inconel 600 bar stock and alloy 600 round bar in diameters of 3–800 mm, in hot-rolled, cold-drawn, bright-annealed, peeled, and centreless-ground finishes. Stocked for immediate dispatch; cut-to-length available.

Applications of Inconel 600 Round Bar

Inconel 600 round bars are used wherever sustained high temperatures and resistance to both oxidising and reducing atmospheres are required. Below are the primary application sectors with the specific components machined from alloy 600 bar stock.

Furnace & Heat Treatment Equipment

  • Radiant tubes, muffles, retorts, baskets and trays — continuous service at 900–1100 °C
  • Quench fixtures, carburising and nitriding retorts
  • Muffle furnace components and fixture bars

Nuclear Engineering Applications

Inconel 600 round bars are specified for nuclear steam generator tube supports and pressurised water reactor (PWR) control rod drive mechanisms. The alloy’s resistance to high-purity water corrosion and neutron-flux environments makes it the grade of record in nuclear codes. Alloy 600 was the original material selected for PWR steam generator tubing.

  • PWR steam generator tube sheet and tubing supports
  • Control rod drive mechanism shafting and guide structures

Aerospace & Gas Turbines

  • Combustion liners and transition liners, secondary combustion chambers
  • Turbine blade root fixings, exhaust system studs, combustor liner fasteners

Chemical & Food Processing

  • Caustic soda vessels, fatty-acid processing equipment
  • Heat exchanger tube sheets, bubble-tray supports in fatty-acid stills, evaporator components

Oil & Gas

  • Subsea wellhead fasteners, downhole pump shafts (H₂S / CO₂ service)
  • Shafts, fasteners and valve stems operating above 650 °C

Electronics & Other

  • Electrical resistance components, spark plug alloy
  • Marine seawater cooling system shaft components, desalination plant shafting

Key Properties of Alloy 600 Bar

  • Excellent resistance to chloride-ion stress corrosion cracking (SCC) that commonly affects austenitic stainless steels
  • Resistance to oxidation at temperatures up to 1093 °C; dense chromia (Cr₂O₃) layer provides protection
  • Resistance to carburisation and nitrogen absorption
  • Outstanding resistance to hot concentrated caustic alkali solutions (NaOH, KOH)
  • High strength retained from cryogenic to elevated temperatures
  • Non-magnetic under all normal service conditions
  • Excellent performance in dry chlorine and hydrogen chloride gas up to 540 °C

Corrosion Resistance of Inconel 600

Inconel 600 exhibits outstanding corrosion resistance across a broad range of environments. Its high nickel content makes it resistant to chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking that commonly affects stainless steels. The alloy resists attack by hot concentrated alkali solutions (NaOH, KOH) and shows excellent performance in dry chlorine and hydrogen chloride gas up to 540 °C. In oxidising conditions at elevated temperatures, the formation of a dense chromia (Cr&sub2;O&sub3;) layer provides effective protection against scaling and further oxidation.

Machining & Welding of Alloy 600 Round Bar

Machining

Inconel 600 bar stock is slightly more machinable than Type 304 stainless steel. Use heavy-duty equipment with sharp, large-section carbide tools to dissipate heat quickly. Avoid work-hardening by maintaining constant feed — dwelling causes rapid tool wear. Keep cutting speeds moderate and use sulphurised mineral oil or soluble oil as cutting fluid.

Hot & Cold Working

Hot working temperature range: 870–1230 °C (1600–2250 °F). Avoid working between 650–870 °C (1200–1600 °F) — the alloy has low ductility in this range. Solution anneal at 1010–1120 °C after hot working to restore optimum properties. Cold forming follows standard stainless steel practice.

Welding

Alloy 600 is readily joined by GTAW, GMAW, and SMAW. Post-weld heat treatment is not normally required.

ProcessRecommended Filler Metal / Consumable
GTAW / TIGInconel Filler Metal 82 (ERNiCr-3)
GMAW / MIGInconel Filler Metal 82 (ERNiCr-3)
SMAWInconel Welding Electrode 182 (ENiCrFe-3)
SAWINCOFLUX 4 Submerged Arc Flux

Note: Welds made with Electrode 182 may show reduced ductility after extended exposure at 540–760 °C. For continuous service in this range, consider post-weld annealing or Filler Metal 82 for SMAW.

Packaging & Export

  • Bars ≤ 50 mm: bundled, steel-strapped, end-capped, VCI poly wrapped
  • Bars > 50 mm: individually VCI wrapped, placed in seaworthy wooden crates
  • All packages marked: Grade / Heat No. / Size / Weight / Standard
  • ISPM 15 fumigated wooden crates; fumigation certificate issued on request
  • Documents included: MTC (EN 10204 3.1), MSDS, packing list, commercial invoice

Frequently Asked Questions — Inconel 600 Round Bar

What is the ASTM standard for Inconel 600 round bars?
Inconel 600 round bars are produced to ASTM B166 / ASME SB166 (UNS N06600). The aerospace equivalent specification is AMS 5665. The European equivalent is DIN 2.4816 / EN NiCr15Fe.
What is the maximum service temperature for Inconel 600?
Inconel 600 can be used continuously up to 1093 °C (2000 °F) in oxidising atmospheres. For cyclic high-temperature service, the alloy’s resistance to thermal fatigue and thermal shock makes it preferred over standard stainless steels. Below 650 °C, standard stainless steel is generally more cost-effective.
Is Inconel 600 the same as Alloy 600?
Yes. Inconel 600 is the registered trade name (Special Metals Corporation) for UNS N06600 / DIN 2.4816. ‘Alloy 600 bar’ and ‘Inconel 600 round bar’ refer to the same material and specification.
Is Inconel 600 magnetic?
No. Inconel 600 is non-magnetic under all normal service conditions. This makes it suitable for electronic and magnetic-sensitive applications.
What is Werkstoff Nr. 2.4816?
Werkstoff Nr. 2.4816 is the German (DIN) equivalent designation for Inconel 600 (UNS N06600). It falls under the EN NiCr15Fe classification.
Can Inconel 600 round bars be welded?
Yes. Inconel 600 is readily welded by TIG (GTAW), MIG (GMAW) and shielded metal arc (SMAW) welding. Recommended filler metal is ERNiCr-3 / Filler Metal 82 (GTAW/GMAW) or ENiCrFe-3 / Electrode 182 (SMAW). Post-weld heat treatment is not normally required.
What diameters are available in Inconel 600 bar stock?
Solitaire Overseas stocks round bars from 3 mm to 800 mm diameter, with flat bar to 500 mm width, hex bar to 100 mm A/F, and custom sizes available via forging.
