Heat Treatment of Inconel 625 Round Bar

Inconel 625 is a solid-solution-strengthened alloy. Unlike precipitation-hardened grades (e.g. Inconel 718), alloy 625 does not require an ageing heat treatment to reach its mechanical properties — its strength is achieved through the addition of niobium and molybdenum to the nickel-chromium matrix during solidification.

Solution Annealing — 980 °C (1,800 °F) minimum

Heat to 980 °C minimum, hold for time proportional to section thickness, then rapid air cool or water quench. This fully dissolves carbides and restores corrosion resistance after forming or welding.

Stress Relieving — 870–925 °C, 2–4 hours

For non-age-hardenable work-hardened bar. Relieves residual stresses without recrystallisation — improving performance in cryogenic and fatigue service. Air cool after hold.

Quenching / Annealing — 927–1038 °C (1,600–1,900 °F)

Standard range per heat treatment charts. Applicable to hex bar and shaped sections as well as round bar.

⚠ Sensitisation Warning: Avoid prolonged exposure in the 650–750 °C range. This precipitates carbides at grain boundaries and reduces corrosion resistance. Solution anneal after any thermal processing in this range.
TreatmentTemperature Range
Quenching / Annealing1,600–1,900 °F (927–1,038 °C)
Stress Relieving1,100–1,600 °F (593–900 °C)
Solution Annealing2,000–2,200 °F (1,093–1,204 °C)

Machining & Welding Inconel 625 Round Bar

Machining

Alloy 625 work-hardens rapidly under cutting loads. Use sharp carbide or ceramic tooling — high-speed steel is not recommended. Apply slow feed rates, maintain continuous chip contact, and use high-pressure flood coolant. Interrupted cuts should be avoided as they accelerate work hardening at the cut surface.

Weldability

Inconel 625 is readily weldable by GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG/MAG), PLASMA, SAW, and SMAW processes. No pre-heat required. Post-weld solution anneal at 980 °C restores full corrosion resistance in critical service applications.

ProcessFiller / ElectrodeNotes
GTAW (TIG) / GMAW (MIG)ERNiCrMo-3 (AMS 5837)Preferred for critical and subsea applications
SMAW (MMA)ENiCrMo-3Site welding and repair
SAWERNiCrMo-3 wireHigh-deposition cladding and overlay
PLASMAERNiCrMo-3Precision welding applications

Weld Overlay / Cladding

Alloy 625 weld overlay is widely specified to protect carbon steel components (boiler tubes, wellheads, valve bodies) from corrosion at low dilution rates. Alloy 625 overlay is specified in waste-to-energy plants, refuse-derived fuel boilers, and subsea wellhead applications. Inconel 625 bar is also used as feedstock for overlay cladding processes on carbon steel substrates.

Why Specify Inconel 625 Round Bar?

  • Exceptional strength without precipitation hardening — reducing processing cost and lead time.
  • Superior thermal-fatigue and cyclic-loading performance vs. stainless steels.
  • No post-weld cracking tendency. ERNiCrMo-3 filler maintains corrosion resistance in as-welded condition.
  • Outperforms 316L stainless in chloride, seawater, and crevice corrosion environments.
  • Compliant with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 for H₂S-containing sour gas service.
  • Maintains mechanical properties from −196°C to 982°C — one alloy for extreme-range applications.

Frequently Asked Questions — Inconel 625 Round Bar

What standard applies to Inconel 625 round bar?
Inconel 625 round bar is produced to ASTM B446 / ASME SB446 (UNS N06625). The equivalent DIN designation is 2.4856 (Werkstoff Nr.) and the EN designation is NiCr22Mo9Nb. For aerospace bar and rod applications, AMS 5540 is the governing specification. AMS 5666 covers wire only. AMS 5837 / ERNiCrMo-3 is the welding wire specification.
What is AMS 5666 and how does it differ from AMS 5664?
AMS 5664 is the aerospace material specification for Inconel 625 bar, rod, and wire — this is the correct specification for round bar in aerospace applications. AMS 5666 is the specification for Inconel 625 wire (non-welding wire) and is not applicable to round bar or rod stock. AMS 5837 covers ERNiCrMo-3 welding wire. Both cover UNS N06625 chemistry, but AMS 5664 includes additional testing requirements such as grain size and inclusion ratings relevant to machined bar applications.
What is the difference between Inconel 625 and Inconel 718 round bar?
Inconel 625 (N06625) is solid-solution strengthened and excels in aqueous corrosion resistance and weldability — the preferred choice for marine, subsea, and chemical processing. Inconel 718 (N07718) is precipitation-hardened with higher tensile strength (965 MPa min.) at temperatures to 704 °C and is the primary choice for aerospace rotating components and high-pressure fasteners. 625 does not require an ageing heat treatment; 718 must be age-hardened to achieve its full properties.
What is the maximum diameter available for Inconel 625 round bar?
Solitaire Overseas supplies Inconel 625 round bar in diameters from 3 mm to 600 mm. Diameters above 250 mm are typically supplied as forged and turned bars with bespoke lead times. Contact us to discuss your specific requirements.
Can Inconel 625 round bar be used in cryogenic applications?
Yes. Alloy 625 retains ductility and toughness at temperatures down to −196 °C, making it suitable for LNG equipment, cryogenic valves, and low-temperature pressure vessel components. This is one of the key advantages of 625 over ferritic and martensitic alloys, which lose toughness at low temperatures.
Can Inconel 625 round bar be used in seawater service?
Yes. Inconel 625 is one of the premier alloys for seawater service due to its outstanding resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. It is widely used in offshore oil and gas components, seawater heat exchangers, marine propeller shafts, and subsea connector systems.
What material certificates are supplied with Inconel 625 round bar?
Standard supply is with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates. EN 10204 3.2 (third-party witnessed by Bureau Veritas, SGS, Intertek, or TÜV) is available on request. NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliance documentation is available for sour service applications.
What welding consumables are used for Inconel 625?
For GTAW/GMAW: ERNiCrMo-3 (AMS 5837 / Inconel 625 filler wire). For SMAW: ENiCrMo-3 electrode. The high Mo and Nb content of the filler prevents weld-metal cracking and maintains corrosion resistance in the as-welded condition. No pre-heat is required. Post-weld solution anneal at 980 °C is recommended for critical corrosion service.
What is the minimum order quantity for Inconel 625 round bar?
Ex-stock supply is available for standard diameters in annealed and cold-drawn conditions. Single-piece supply is available for prototypes and R&D. For non-standard diameters or custom conditions, minimum order quantities apply — contact us for a same-day quotation.
Does Inconel 625 require heat treatment to achieve its properties?
No. Unlike Inconel 718, Alloy 625 achieves its strength through solid-solution hardening. The annealed condition provides high tensile and yield strength without any ageing heat treatment. This simplifies procurement, removes post-processing steps, and reduces cost.
