Inconel Alloy 601 round bars are common in chemical processing, heat treatment equipment, and aerospace parts because of the superior capability against high-temperature oxidation and corrosion. Inconel 601 square bars and flat bars have good thermal and electrical conductivity as well as stable mechanical properties at higher temperatures.

Inconel 601 threaded bars are suitable for service above 600°F (315°C) where their low carbon chemistry avoids sensitisation and the aluminium addition ensures stable oxidation resistance. Inconel UNS N06601 hollow bars provide a wide operating temperature range along with good ductility and strength.

Alloy 601 bars and rods are highly resistant to oxidising, carburisation and nitriding conditions. This alloy is also provided with good performance in oxidising and reducing atmosphere to a small degree.

Inconel 601 rods are widely specified for heat treatment fixtures, furnace components, and chemical processing equipment where both oxidation resistance and dimensional stability under load are required simultaneously.

Alloy 601 round bar is a nickel-chromium alloy with the addition of aluminium, which creates a protective oxide coating, increasing resistance to thermal cycling. These bars are characterized by high strength, good fabrication characteristics, and good weldability.

Our Inconel 601 round bar products are widely used in extreme environments such as high temperature and high pressure applications. Inconel 601 hex bars offer good forming and welding characteristics, and are available in customised sizes as per customer requirements.

Inconel 601 square bars provide high tensile strength, good corrosion resistance, and excellent fabrication properties. The alloy’s composition ensures resistance to pitting and oxidation, making it suitable for demanding industrial applications.

Properties of Inconel 601 Alloy

Inconel 601 Cold Forming

The rate of cooling following hot working is not critical with respect to thermal cracking. To avoid sensitization, the alloy should be cooled rapidly through the 1000–1400°F (540–760°C) temperature range. Inconel alloy 601 is cold formed using conventional methods. The alloy’s work-hardening rate is slightly higher than that of Inconel 600 and Incoloy 800.

Inconel 601 Hot Forming

The temperature range for hot forming Inconel alloy 601 is 1600–2250°F (870–1230°C). Heavy working operations should be performed between 1900–2250°F (1040–1230°C). The alloy shows reduced ductility between 1200–1600°F (650–870°C) and should not be worked in this range.

Inconel 601 Machining

Standard machining operations can be performed on Alloy 601. For best results, the alloy should be in solution-treated condition.

Inconel 601 Welding

Inconel alloy 601 offers good weldability and can be joined using conventional welding processes such as GTAW, GMAW, and SMAW. Welding consumables should be selected based on service conditions.

Recommended filler metals: ERNiCrFe-11 (GTAW/GMAW) or ENiCrFe-11 (SMAW) for matching chemistry. Post-weld annealing at 1100–1150 °C is recommended for maximum corrosion resistance.

Inconel 601 Heat Treatment

The alloy must be clean before heat treatment. Contaminants such as oil, grease, or paint should be removed prior to heating. Inconel 601 is not strengthened by heat treatment but can achieve different strength levels through cold working and annealing.

Applications of Inconel 601 Round Bar

Alloy 601 round bars are the preferred choice wherever extreme-temperature oxidation, carburisation, or nitrogen pick-up resistance is required:

  • Industrial furnaces: radiant tubes, burner nozzles, strand-annealing rollers
  • Thermal processing: fixture bars, hanger rods, conveyor bars in heat treatment furnaces
  • Petrochemical: reformer tube hangers, catalyst support grids, tube sheets
  • Gas turbines: combustion chamber linings, transition pieces, cooling hole inserts
  • Power generation: steam superheater and reheater tube hangers
  • Automotive: catalytic converter components, exhaust valve spindles
  • Glass industry: glass melting pot supports, handling equipment
  • Ammonia cracking: reformer tubes, burner tiles, and retort components in ammonia synthesis and cracking plants

Key Properties — Why Inconel 601?

  • Exceptional resistance to high-temperature oxidation up to 1200 °C — superior to alloy 600 and most nickel alloys
  • Good resistance to carburisation in hydrocarbon-containing atmospheres
  • Resistance to nitriding — preferred for ammonia-processing equipment
  • Aluminium forms protective adherent Al₂O₃–Cr₂O₃ scale, reducing spalling under thermal cycling
  • Good hot strength and creep resistance above 900 °C
  • Suitable for both oxidising and mildly reducing high-temperature atmospheres

Frequently Asked Questions — Inconel 601 Round Bar

What makes Inconel 601 better than Inconel 600 at high temperatures?
The aluminium addition (1.0–1.7%) in Inconel 601 promotes the formation of a mixed Al₂O₃–Cr₂O₃ oxide scale that is more adherent and stable under thermal cycling than the chromia scale of Alloy 600. This extends the maximum service temperature to approximately 1200 °C vs ~1093 °C for Alloy 600.
What is DIN 2.4851?
DIN 2.4851 (now Werkstoff Nr. 2.4851) is the German equivalent of Inconel 601 (UNS N06601). It falls under the EN NiCr23Fe designation.
Is Inconel 601 suitable for reducing atmospheres?
Inconel 601 performs well in oxidising atmospheres. In mildly reducing atmospheres (such as nitrogen-hydrogen mixtures in heat treatment), it offers adequate performance. However, in strongly reducing environments (e.g., pure hydrogen at very high temperatures), Alloy 601 is less preferred than Alloy 600.
What is the maximum service temperature of Inconel 601?
In oxidising atmospheres, Inconel 601 is rated to approximately 1200 °C (2190 °F) — the highest of the common nickel-chromium alloys. This is enabled by the aluminium addition, which forms an adherent Al₂O₃–Cr₂O₃ scale that resists spalling under repeated thermal cycling. For continuous service above 1100 °C, wall thickness and load conditions must be considered in design.
What ASTM standard covers Inconel 601 round bar?
Inconel 601 round bar is covered under ASTM B166 (and the pressure-vessel equivalent ASME SB166). The UNS designation is N06601 and the German Werkstoff Nr. is 2.4851. Mill test certificates are issued to EN 10204 3.1 as standard; 3.2 (third-party witnessed) is available on request.
