Alloy 825 is a nickel-iron-chromium alloy with additions of molybdenum, copper and titanium, specifically designed for exceptional corrosion resistance in both oxidising and reducing acidic environments. It was originally developed to provide superior resistance to sulphuric acid corrosion, and subsequently proved outstanding in phosphoric acid, wet-process acid, seawater, and environments containing chlorides and sulphur compounds. Unlike Incoloy 800, Alloy 825 is not a high-temperature structural material — its value lies in its broad corrosion resistance across diverse aqueous environments.

Corrosion Resistance of Incoloy 825 Round Bar

Incoloy 825 offers a uniquely broad corrosion resistance profile that covers both oxidising and reducing acidic environments — a combination rarely found in a single alloy:

• Sulphuric Acid (H₂SO₄): Excellent resistance across all concentrations, particularly at elevated temperature.
• Phosphoric Acid (H₃PO₄): Outstanding resistance including wet-process phosphoric acid containing fluoride impurities.
• Nitric Acid (HNO₃): Good resistance in dilute concentrations due to high Cr content.
• Organic Acids: Good resistance to acetic, formic and lactic acids.
• Seawater & Chloride Brines: Mo + Cu combination prevents pitting and crevice corrosion; CPT ~50 °C.

Welding and Machining Guidelines for Incoloy 825 Bar

Incoloy 825 round bar welds readily by all conventional processes. Recommended filler materials: Inconel Filler Metal 625 (GTAW/GMAW) and Inconel Welding Electrode 112 (SMAW). For maximum corrosion resistance post-weld, use Inco-Weld 686CPT. Stabilizing anneal at 940 °C (1724 °F) after welding restores intergranular corrosion resistance. Machining is best performed in annealed condition — use sharp carbide tooling with adequate coolant to manage work-hardening.

Incoloy 800 (UNS N08800) is optimised for high-temperature oxidation resistance (up to 1100 °C) in heat treatment furnaces and steam applications. Incoloy 825 (UNS N08825) is designed for aqueous corrosion resistance — sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, sour gas environments — at process temperatures up to ~538 °C. For acid service: choose 825. For furnace/steam service: choose 800.
