At four inches the material saving that justifies WP1 is real. At one inch it has vanished. That is the honest position of F1 forged fittings: carbon-moly costs meaningfully less than chrome-moly by the tonne, but a one inch forged coupling weighs almost nothing, so the price gap between F1 and F11 closes to near irrelevance while the metallurgical gap does not. When F1 Makes Sense, and When It Does Not

The case for carbon-molybdenum steel is cost. It buys creep strength over plain carbon steel without paying for chromium. That argument holds well on large diameter heavy wall pipe and buttweld fittings, where tonnage is real. It weakens sharply on small forged fittings.

Saying this plainly is more useful than pretending F1 has a performance advantage it does not have. Where it is specified, we supply it. Where either would do, F11 is usually the easier grade to source and carries the added oxidation resistance chromium provides.

Carbon-Molybdenum, No Specified Chromium

F1 is carbon steel with roughly half a percent of molybdenum and no chromium requirement. Molybdenum raises creep strength; chromium would provide oxidation resistance, and F1 has none specified. That limits the grade to moderate temperature service rather than genuinely hot duty.

  • Small bore connections on WP1 or P1 systems, keeping grade consistent through the joint.
  • Moderate temperature instrument and drain lines, where the specification names F1.
  • Replacement work on plant originally built to the grade.

If the specification names F1, use F1.
