A carbon steel spade flange is one of the simplest ways to get that certainty. It is a solid steel disc with a handle, fitted between two pipe flanges with a gasket on each side, and once it is bolted in, nothing gets past it. Solitaire Overseas supplies carbon steel spade flanges, also called paddle blanks, in ASTM A105, A350 LF2 and A694 grades, from 1/2" to 24" in Class 150 to 2500, along with the matching ring spacers. This page explains how a spade works, how it differs from a spacer, a spectacle blind and a blind flange, which grade to pick, and the dimensions you need to order the right part first time.
Solitaire Overseas is a Mumbai based supplier and exporter of pipes, tubes, fittings and flanges for oil and gas, power, fertiliser and process plants. You can browse our wider range of carbon steel products or request a quote for the spades and spacers you need.

Classes 600 to 2500 are made to ASME B16.48. Send us the size and class and we will confirm thickness and handle width with the quote
The grade you choose depends on the service temperature and the strength of the line. An A105 spade flange is the standard choice, an A350 LF2 spade flange is used where impact testing is needed for low temperature service, and A694 grades suit high yield transmission pipelines.
| Grade | Product form | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
|
ASTM A105 / A105N (ASME SA105) |
Forging |
General and high temperature carbon steel piping; the standard spade grade |
|
ASTM A350 LF2 (ASME SA350 LF2) |
Forging |
Low temperature service down to minus 46 C, where impact testing is required |
|
ASTM A694 F42, F46, F52, F60, F65, F70 |
Forging |
High yield transmission pipelines, matched to API 5L line pipe grades |
|
ASTM A516 Gr.70 (ASME SA516) |
Plate |
Spades cut from plate, usually larger sizes and thicker blanks |
|
ASTM A36 |
Plate |
Low pressure, non critical service |
As a rule, match the spade to the grade of the pipe and flanges on either side of it. Where the line is corrosive or very hot, look at our alloy steel flanges or stainless steel materials instead.
Send us the NPS, class, face and grade, and we will confirm the dimensions and price.
A carbon steel spade flange, also called a paddle blank, is a solid disc with a handle that is fitted between two pipe flanges to isolate a line. The most common grade is ASTM A105.
A spade is solid and blocks the line. A ring spacer has a central opening and keeps the pipe length when the line is open. They are used as a pair and swapped to open or close the line.
ASME B16.48 covers line blanks, including spades, ring spacers and spectacle blinds, in NPS 1/2" to 24" and Class 150 to 2500. The mating flanges follow ASME B16.5.
ASTM A105 for general and high temperature service, ASTM A350 LF2 for low temperature service, ASTM A694 F42 to F70 for high yield pipelines, and ASTM A516 Gr.70 for spades cut from plate.
A spectacle blind joins a solid disc and an open ring on one figure eight plate. A spade and spacer are two separate parts that are swapped.
A blind flange closes the end of a pipe and bolts to one flange. A spade is fitted between two flanges to isolate a line in the middle of a pipe run.
NPS 1/2" to 24" in Class 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500 and 2500, with RF, FF and RTJ faces. Larger sizes and special dimensions are made to drawing.
Yes. Carbon steel rusts, so spades are supplied with rust preventive oil, zinc plating or galvanising, depending on storage and service.
