Carbon Steel Spacer Ring
A carbon steel spacer ring is an overlooked component that has been part of the assembly for most of its existence. It resembles a steel ring with a handle and has a thickness and outer diameter similar to that of a spade, but with a hole in the middle to accommodate a pipe bore. During the operation of the plant, the spacer ring is located in a joint, where the flow travels undisturbed. When the line needs blanking, the ring comes out and a spade goes in, and because both are the same thickness the bolts and pipe stay exactly where they were. Spacer Carbon Steel Ring Dimensions
ASME B16.48 gives the spacer ring the same outside diameter and thickness as the matching spade, with a bore close to the pipe outside diameter. The tables below are for raised or flat face flanges; ring type joint versions differ.
