Carbon Steel Ring Type Joint Flanges

Carbon Steel Ring Type Joint Flanges

Most flanged connections depend on the presence of a gasket that flattens between two surfaces. This is generally effective up until the pressure and temperature are sufficiently high for the gasket to come unstuck, deform, or otherwise travel along with the fluid flow. A metal ring sits in a machined groove in each flange face, and the bolts press it into a tight metal to metal seal that gets tighter as line pressure rises. Solitaire Overseas supplies carbon steel ring type joint flanges in ASTM A105, A350 LF2 and A694, from 1/2" to 24" in Class 150 to 2500, with matching ring joint gaskets on request. This page explains how the joint seals, which grade and ring to choose, the pressure ratings for carbon steel, and the groove dimensions you need to order the right flange first time.

Solitaire Overseas is an exporter of tubes, pipes and flanges in Mumbai, offering countless products for industries such as oil and gas, fertilizer, power and process plants. You can find all types of carbon steel supplies or ask for a quote for the RTJ flanges.

Ratings are for ASME B16.5 Group 1.1 materials such as ASTM A105 and A350 LF2, in psig. Carbon steel is limited to about 800 F (427 C) in prolonged service. Confirm the rating for your grade and temperature before ordering.

Not sure which ring or groove you need?

Send us the NPS, class and grade, and we will confirm the ring number and groove dimensions with the quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a carbon steel flange with a machined groove in the face that holds a metal ring gasket. The ring seals metal to metal and is used for high pressure and high temperature service. The most common grade is ASTM A105.

A metal ring sits in a groove in each flange. As the bolts are tightened, the ring deforms against the groove walls, and line pressure helps keep it tight. The ring is a separate part that is replaced at each assembly.

A raised face flange seals with a soft or semi metallic gasket on a raised face. An RTJ flange seals with a metal ring in a groove, which suits higher pressure and temperature.

ASTM A105 for general and high temperature service, ASTM A350 LF2 for low temperature service, and ASTM A694 F42 to F70 for high yield pipelines.

Soft iron or low carbon steel rings are the usual choice, because the ring must be softer than the flange. Use alloy or stainless rings for higher temperature or corrosive service, and check the ring number against the flange size and class.

No. The ring deforms when the joint is made, so a new ring should be used each time the joint is opened.

ASME B16.5 covers flanges and groove dimensions up to NPS 24, ASME B16.47 covers NPS 26 to 60, and ASME B16.20 covers the ring gaskets.

ASME B16.5 classes end at 2500. A 5000 psi rating belongs to API 6A wellhead flanges, which use different ring types and grooves, so check the standard your project specifies.
