Carbon steel tongue and groove flanges come as a pair that only works together. One flange has a narrow ring, the tongue, standing about 1/4 inch off its face. The other has a groove cut to take that ring. The gasket is placed in the indentation, and when the tongue presses onto it, the gasket is held firmly down inside as well as outside. It has nowhere to squeeze to, which is exactly why people specify this face on exchangers and vessel covers. We make them in ASTM A105, A350 LF2 and A694 to the facing sizes in ASME B16.5. Solitaire Overseas is a Mumbai based stockist and exporter of carbon steel flanges, pipe and fittings. Each tongue and groove pair is supplied with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate traced to its heat, and third-party inspection is available on request.

Tongue height 0.25 in (6.4 mm). Groove depth 0.19 in (4.8 mm). In Classes 400 to 2500 the 1/4 inch tongue height is in addition to the minimum flange thickness. The lap left after machining the groove must be at least the nominal pipe wall thickness. Outside diameter, bolt circle and drilling are the same as a raised face flange of the same size and class. A matched flange pair where a raised ring (tongue) on one flange fits a groove in the other, trapping the gasket inside the groove.
Tongue and groove confines the gasket on both inner and outer edges. Male and female confines it on the outer edge only.
No. A tongue must mate with a groove. Order tongue and groove flanges as matched pairs.
The groove walls hold it. The outer wall prevents blowout and the inner wall keeps it out of the bore, away from the flow.
ASME B16.5 gives tongue and groove facing dimensions for NPS 1/2" to 24". Larger flanges follow ASME B16.47 or drawing.
ASTM A105 for general service, A350 LF2 for low temperature service, and A694 F52 to F70 for high yield pipelines.
NPS 1/2" to 24" to ASME B16.5, larger to order, in Class 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500 and 2500.
