Availability decides this one more often than metallurgy does. F11 and F12 are close enough in chemistry that either would serve most duties, but F11 is the grade stockists actually hold at small bore, so an F12 requirement is usually a specification requirement rather than an engineering preference. Made to order has consequences. A grade that is not held in stock carries a lead time, a minimum quantity and often a price premium that outweighs any nominal material saving. Where a project specification permits either grade, saying so at the enquiry stage usually produces a better answer than ordering F12 by default. Where the specification names F12, or where the existing plant is F12 and a mixed-grade weld is unwelcome, we supply it.

Size range: 1/8 inch to 4 inch NPS. Above 4 inch the line moves to buttweld under ASME B16.9.
Where F12 Forged Fittings Are Used
Supplied as couplings, unions,plugs, bushings and street elbows, plus forged elbows and tees.
Matching pipe: ASTM A335 P12 pipes. Closest alternative: F11 forged fittings.
If the specification names one, use it. If either is acceptable, F11 is usually the practical choice at small bore because it is widely stocked while F12 is generally made to order, which carries lead time and often a minimum quantity. Product form. F12 under ASTM A182 is the forged fitting to ASME B16.11, socket weld or threaded, 1/8 inch to 4 inch. WP12 under ASTM A234 is the buttweld fitting to ASME B16.9. The 1Cr-0.5Mo alloy is the same. See our WP12 fittings page.
Two, Class 1 and Class 2, distinguished by heat treatment and the resulting mechanical properties. F11 by contrast has three. Note that the A182 material class is separate from the ASME B16.11 pressure class, so a complete order names both, for example F12 Class 2, Class 3000 socket weld.
