What Is a Carbon Steel Elbow? 

A carbon steel elbow is a pipe fitting used to change the direction of flow in a piping run, most commonly through a 90° or 45° bend, with 180° return bends used where a line needs to fold back on itself (such as in heat exchanger or coil piping). Elbows are one of the most frequently specified fittings in any pressure piping system, since almost no real pipeline runs in a single straight line from source to destination.

The radius of the bend matters for flow: a long radius (LR) elbow has a centerline radius of 1.5 times the nominal pipe diameter, giving a gentler turn with lower pressure drop and less erosion at the bend. A short radius (SR) elbow has a centerline radius equal to the pipe diameter, taking up less space but creating more turbulence and pressure loss, SR elbows are generally reserved for tight layouts where space, not flow efficiency, is the priority.

A carbon steel elbow changes the direction of a pipe run, most commonly through a 90° or 45° bend, and is one of the most widely used fittings in any piping system. 

A long radius (LR) elbow has a centerline radius of 1.5 times the pipe diameter, giving a gentler bend with lower pressure drop. A short radius (SR) elbow has a centerline radius equal to the pipe diameter, taking up less space but creating more turbulence, SR elbows suit tight layouts, while LR elbows are preferred for normal process and high-velocity service.

Buttweld carbon steel pipe elbows are dimensioned to ASME B16.9 (long radius) and ASME B16.28 (short radius and 180° returns). Forged socket weld and threaded elbows follow ASME B16.11.

Standard buttweld elbows are ASTM A234 Grade WPB or WPC, matched to A106 Grade B or C pipe respectively. Forged socket weld and threaded elbows are ASTM A105. Low-temperature service uses ASTM A420 WPL3/WPL6, and high-yield cross-country pipeline service uses ASTM A860 WPHY 42-70.

The terms are often used loosely, but strictly a cs elbow is a standard 45°/90°/180° fitting made to ASME B16.9/B16.28/B16.11 dimensions, while a "bend" (such as a 3D or 5D bend) is pipe cold- or hot-formed to a custom radius, often used where an even gentler direction change is needed than a standard LR elbow provides. Both serve the same basic function of changing flow direction.
