Carbon Steel Reducers Manufacturer and Supplier

Solitaire Overseas manufactures carbon steel reducers dimensioned to ASME B16.9 and supplied in ASTM A234 Grade WPB or WPC material, for joining two pipe runs of different nominal size in a single buttweld fitting. Carbon steel reducers are available as concentric reducers, which taper on a common centerline, and eccentric reducers, which keep one side of the pipe wall flush and offset the centerline, chosen based on whether the piping run needs to stay level on the top or bottom of the pipe. Our carbon steel reducer range covers NPS 1/2 inch to 48 inch, with full mill test certification and dimensional inspection on every batch.

Carbon Steel Reducers: Concentric vs Eccentric

CriteriaConcentric ReducerEccentric Reducer
CenterlineSingle, common centerline on both endsOffset centerline; one side stays flush
Typical UseGeneral pipe size transitionsPump suction (flat up) or drain lines (flat down)
Air/Liquid HandlingCan trap air or liquid at the top or bottomAvoids vapor pockets or liquid holdup by design
Support RequirementsStraightforward, symmetrical supportMay need additional support due to offset geometry

Types of Carbon Steel Reducers

  • Concentric Reducer - tapers symmetrically about a single common centerline, for general size transitions.
  • Eccentric Reducer (Flat Side Up) - keeps the top of the pipe level, commonly used on pump suction lines to prevent vapor pockets.
  • Eccentric Reducer (Flat Side Down) - keeps the bottom of the pipe level, commonly used on gravity drain lines to prevent liquid holdup.

Applications of Carbon Steel Reducers

  • Pipe size transitions between different pipeline sections
  • Pump suction piping, using eccentric reducers with flat side up to avoid air pockets
  • Gravity drain and sloped lines, using eccentric reducers with flat side down to avoid liquid holdup
  • Refinery, petrochemical and power plant process piping
  • Cross country and plant pipeline systems requiring diameter step-downs

Frequently Asked Questions

A carbon steel reducer connects two pipe runs of different nominal diameters in a single buttweld fitting, allowing the pipeline size to step up or down as required.

A concentric reducer tapers symmetrically about a single centerline, while an eccentric reducer offsets the centerline so one side of the pipe wall stays flush, commonly used to keep the top level on pump suction lines or the bottom level on gravity drains.

ASME B16.9 sets the overall dimensions, tolerances, testing and marking for carbon steel buttweld reducers from NPS 1/2 inch to 48 inch.

ASTM A234 Grade WPB is the most common carbon steel material for standard temperature service, matching ASTM A106 Grade B pipe, while Grade WPC is used where higher minimum tensile and yield strength is required.

An eccentric reducer installed with the flat side up keeps the top of the pipe level, preventing a vapor or air pocket from forming at the pump suction that could cause cavitation.

Carbon steel buttweld reducers are available from NPS 1/2 inch through NPS 48 inch, equivalent to DN 15 through DN 1200.
