A carbon steel plate flange is cut and machined from flat steel plate rather than forged from a billet, built to ASME B16.5 and ANSI B16.5 for Class 150 and 300 duty in grades such as ASTM A105 and mild steel. This construction keeps cost and lead time lower than a forged flange of the same size, which makes plate flanges a practical choice for general piping, water systems and lower-pressure process lines where a forged flange would add cost without adding benefit.
