ASTM A182 F36 Forged Fittings

ASTM A182 F36 Forged Fittings

F36 is the odd one out in this grade family. Every other alloy grade in ASTM A182 has a matching buttweld grade in ASTM A234, so F11 pairs with WP11 and F91 pairs with WP91. F36 has no partner. There is no WP36, which means anyone who has written WP36 on a requisition has almost certainly misread an F36 requirement somewhere upstream. Solitaire Overseas supplies A182 F36 forged fittings from India to order. It is a niobium and nitrogen micro-alloyed low alloy steel, UNS K21001, and it is genuinely uncommon.

Part of our alloy steel fittings range. If you were looking for a buttweld grade, see why there is no ASTM A234 WP36.

Why F36 Has No Buttweld Equivalent

Across the chrome-moly range the two standards mirror each other. ASTM A182 covers the forged fittings, flanges, valves and parts; ASTM A234 covers the wrought buttweld fittings. Most grades appear in both, which is why the grade pages on this site come in pairs.

Forged (A182)Buttweld (A234)Pairs?
F11WP11Yes
F22WP22Yes
F91WP91Yes
F92WP92Yes
F36No equivalentNo. There is no A234 WP36

The practical consequence. If a drawing or requisition specifies WP36, it is wrong. The most likely explanations are that someone meant F36 and wrote the buttweld prefix by habit, that they meant a 36 inch fitting in a standard grade, or that ASTM A36 structural steel has been confused with a fittings grade. Sorting that out before ordering saves a rejected delivery.

The Alloy

ASTM A182 Grade F36 is a low alloy steel, not a stainless steel, despite occasional supplier listings that describe it otherwise. It carries UNS number K21001, is supplied in the normalized and tempered condition, and is micro-alloyed with niobium and nitrogen. Niobium raises yield strength by forming fine precipitates, and nitrogen works alongside it, the same broad strengthening mechanism used in the modified 9Cr grades although at a very different alloy level.

Product Range and Supply

Supplied as forged fittings to ASME B16.11, socket weld and threaded, 1/8 inch to 4 inch NPS, in pressure classes 2000 to 9000. Available as couplings, unions, plugs and forged elbows and tees.

Made to order. F36 is uncommon and is not held in stock. Send the governing specification with your enquiry so availability, lead time and minimum quantity can be confirmed. EN 10204 3.1 certification is supplied as standard, with PMI on request, which is worth specifying on a grade this rarely handled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. ASTM A182 Grade F36 exists and carries UNS number K21001. It is a low alloy steel supplied normalized and tempered, micro-alloyed with niobium and nitrogen. Some supplier listings incorrectly describe it as a stainless steel, which it is not.

No. Unlike the chrome-moly grades, where F11 pairs with WP11 and F91 with WP91, F36 has no buttweld equivalent in ASTM A234. A requisition specifying WP36 is therefore an error, most likely a misread F36, a 36 inch fitting in a standard grade, or a confusion with ASTM A36 structural steel.

No. It is a low alloy steel. The confusion appears to come from supplier listings describing it as a stainless grade, which is incorrect. F36 is micro-alloyed with niobium and nitrogen and supplied in the normalized and tempered condition.

No. It is an uncommon grade and made to order. Send the governing specification so availability and lead time can be confirmed before you commit, and consider specifying PMI given how rarely the grade is handled.
