The long tapered hub is the entire product. Everything a weld neck flange is good for follows from that gradual thickening between the flange face and the pipe: it moves the butt weld away from the highly stressed flange base, it spreads bending load over a length of metal instead of concentrating it at a fillet, and it lets the bore run through with no step for turbulence to catch on. Three Things the Tapered Hub Buys You

  • It relocates the weld. The butt weld sits at the end of the hub, away from the flange base where bending stress concentrates. A slip-on puts its fillet welds right at the hub, in the worst place for it.
  • It distributes bending load. The taper transitions gradually from flange thickness to pipe wall, so load spreads along the hub rather than concentrating at an abrupt change of section. That is the reason weld neck outlasts other types under cycling.
  • It keeps the bore continuous. The hub bore is machined to match the pipe bore, so there is no step at the joint. No step means no turbulence, no erosion focus and no crevice, which matters on both flow-sensitive and corrosion-sensitive service.

Because the bore is machined to match the pipe, a weld neck flange must be ordered to the SCHEDULE of the connecting pipe, not just to a nominal size. A Class 300 6 inch weld neck for Sch 40 pipe is a different part from the same flange for Sch 80. This is a routine ordering error and stating it prevents wrong deliveries.

Raised face is the general default. Ring type joint takes over at Class 900 and above and in hot high pressure service, where a metal-to-metal seal copes better than a compressed gasket.
