In the case of stabilised austenitic grades in the range of sensitisation temperatures from 425 to 875 degrees C, SS 347 differs from SS 321 in one important way, that is, the stabilising element. Unlike titanium, SS 347 is a material that is made of niobium (columbium). The weld metal produced with ER347 filler is naturally stabilised, no secondary treatment is required.ER347 filler does not consume niobium from the weld and produces a naturally stabilised weld metal. SS 347 is the preferred grade for complex multi-pass welded assemblies, weld overlay and for cases where contamination with titanium is not acceptable for nuclear service.
Solitaire Overseas offers a full line of Stainless Steel Fittings in both buttweld and forged forms in Grade 347 (UNS S34700, DIN 1.4550, EN X6CrNiNb18-10) to match the ASTM A403 WP347 and ASTM A182 F347 standards respectively. Available in standard sizes and documented with full EN 10204 3.1, SS 347 fittings are part of our Stainless Steel Products.

Both SS 347 and SS 321 Fittings resist intergranular corrosion in the sensitisation range. The table below shows the key selection criteria for buyers choosing between the three stabilised grades.
| Property | SS 347 (This Grade) | SS 321 | SS 347H |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stabilising Element | Niobium / Columbium (Nb) | Titanium (Ti) | Niobium (Nb) |
| Carbon Max | 0.08% | 0.08% | 0.04 to 0.10% |
| Weld Deposit Stabilisation | Yes - Nb retained in weld | No - Ti lost to arc | Yes |
| Best For | Welded assemblies, nuclear service | High-temp non-nuclear service | High-temp welded, creep-limited service |
| Nuclear / Radiation Service | Preferred (no Ti) | Acceptable in some cases | Preferred |
Note: SS 347 and SS 348 share similar compositions. SS 348 carries tighter cobalt and tantalum limits for specific nuclear codes. Confirm the applicable code with your inspector before specifying grade 347 for nuclear service.

Both grades resist sensitisation. SS 347 uses niobium as stabiliser; SS 321 uses titanium. Niobium is retained in weld deposits, making 347 the preferred choice for welded assemblies and nuclear service.
ASTM A403 WP347 covers buttweld fittings; ASTM A182 F347 covers forged fittings. ASME equivalents are SA403 WP347 and SA182 F347 respectively.
Titanium is avoided in nuclear coolant systems. SS 347, stabilised with niobium, avoids Ti contamination. ER347 filler wire welds produce a stabilised deposit, making it inherently suitable for nuclear piping.
SS 347 resists sensitisation for sustained service in the 425 to 875 degrees C range. Above 875 degrees C niobium carbides dissolve and protection diminishes. Use SS 310 or 310S for higher temperatures.
