Stainless Steel 304 Flanges also known as the 18-8 grade are the most widely used austenitic stainless steel pipe flanges in the world, valued for their balanced combination of corrosion resistance, strength, and weldability. Produced by ASTM A182 F304 / ASME SA182 F304 (and the low-carbon variant F304L), these flanges carry a nominal composition of 18% chromium and 8–10.5% nickel, with a maximum carbon content of 0.08%. The chromium forms a self-healing passive oxide layer that resists oxidising acids, atmospheric corrosion, and most organic compounds across a wide temperature range.
We have been manufacturing SS 304 Flanges UNS S30400, DIN 1.4301, Werkstoff Nr. 1.4301 at our Mumbai facility for years, and the production sequence has not changed: open-die or closed-die forging, solution annealing, and precision CNC machining to final dimensional tolerances. Every flange leaves our plant with a mill test report traceable to the raw material heat number. We stock the full range from ½" (15 NB) to 48" (1200 NB) across pressure classes 150# to 2500#, covering all face types — WNRF, SORF, Blind, Orifice, Socket Weld, and more for both domestic orders and export shipments.

SS 304L is the low-carbon variant of SS 304, with a maximum carbon content of 0.03% versus 0.08% in standard 304. The reduced carbon limits carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone during welding, preventing sensitisation and intergranular corrosion. For most general-purpose applications the two grades perform identically; however, 304L is the preferred choice for welded assemblies operating in corrosive environments, particularly where post-weld annealing is not feasible. Solitaire Overseas supplies dual-certified 304/304L material on request, offering procurement flexibility without re-stocking.
ASTM A182 F304 is the standard specification covering forged or rolled alloy and stainless steel pipe flanges, fittings, and valves for high-temperature service. The "F304" designation identifies the Grade 304 austenitic stainless steel composition — 18–20% Cr, 8–10.5% Ni, max 0.08% C. The equivalent ASME designation is SA182 F304. Flanges produced to this standard are suitable for high-temperature piping systems and must pass chemical analysis, mechanical testing, and dimensional inspection before release.
SS 304 flanges can be used in continuous service up to approximately 870°C (1600°F) in non-oxidising, non-sensitising conditions. For intermittent service the upper limit is around 925°C (1700°F). Caution is required in the sensitisation range of 425°C–860°C — prolonged exposure at these temperatures causes chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries, reducing corrosion resistance. For service in this range, specify SS 304L (low-carbon) flanges to minimise this risk. Pressure ratings decrease significantly above 400°F; consult the ANSI/ASME B16.34 pressure-temperature chart on this page.
SS 304 flanges are not recommended for continuous immersion in seawater or high-chloride environments. Chloride ions above approximately 200 ppm break down the passive oxide layer, making Grade 304 susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion. For coastal, offshore, or marine process applications, Grade 316 or 316L flanges (containing 2–3% molybdenum) provide significantly better resistance. For aggressive seawater or brine service, Duplex or Super Duplex grades are recommended.
Solitaire Overseas manufactures and supplies Stainless Steel 304 Flanges in nominal pipe sizes from ½ inch (15 NB) through 48 inch (1200 NB), conforming to ANSI/ASME B16.5 (up to 24 inch) and ASME B16.47 Series A & B (26 inch to 60 inch). All standard pressure classes — 150#, 300#, 600#, 900#, 1500#, and 2500# — are available. Common sizes in Class 150 and 300 are held in ex-stock at our Mumbai warehouse for fast dispatch.
At temperatures between -20°F and 100°F (-29°C to 38°C), ASME B16.5 Class 150 SS 304 flanges are rated at 275 psi (18.96 bar). Ratings reduce progressively with temperature — to 205 psi at 300°F, 140 psi at 600°F, and just 10 psi at 1500°F. For higher pressure ratings, Class 300 (720 psi), Class 600 (1440 psi), Class 900 (2160 psi), Class 1500 (3600 psi), and Class 2500 (6000 psi) flanges are available from Solitaire Overseas.
No — SS 304 is corrosion resistant, not fully rust-proof. The 18% chromium forms a self-repairing passive oxide film that protects against rust in most atmospheric conditions and mildly corrosive media. However, in the presence of chlorides (salt air, seawater, de-icing salts) or strongly reducing acids (hydrochloric acid, dilute sulphuric acid), this protective film can break down, leading to pitting, crevice corrosion, or stress corrosion cracking. Regular cleaning and avoiding standing water in crevices extends service life in marginal environments.
Every order of Stainless Steel 304 Flanges from Solitaire Overseas is supplied with: Mill Test Report (MTR) per EN 10204 Type 3.1 (or 3.2 with third-party endorsement), confirming heat-traceable chemical composition and mechanical test results; Dimensional Inspection Report; Hydrostatic Test Certificate (where specified); Positive Material Identification (PMI) report; and Packing List / Country of Origin certificate for export orders. Third-party inspection by SGS, Bureau Veritas, TÜV, Lloyds, or DNV can be arranged at the client's request.
