ASTM A420 WPL8 pipe fittings are 9% nickel low-alloy steel fittings for low-temperature and deep cryogenic pressure piping and pressure vessels. WPL8 is the lowest grade in the ASTM A420 system, the coldest rating of -320°F [-195°C] and is not stainless steel. The nickel content prevents the D-BT which is normally present in carbon steel at cryogenic temperatures and makes it brittle, while the cost is much lower than austenitic stainless steel for this application.
